Mt. Wilson Toll Road
The Fire Saddle

This type of land is helplessly fire prone, yet the climax vegetation for frequently burned areas is very beautiful and bountiful property. This photograph shows how a healthy forest works, just charred bark on a live tree, little or no deadwood on the ground, good forage. Light is semi-shade or open. The foreground tree is a type of cyprus or cedar, behind me is a gnarly old yellow pine. Both sides of this saddle get regular burning. The southeast side is very arid, a solar furnace, so has few trees, mainly shrubs and grasses.
