The Fire Saddle
This type of land is helplessly fire prone, yet the climax vegetation for frequently burned areas is very beautiful and bountiful property. This photograph shows how a healthy forest works, just charred bark on a live tree, little or no deadwood on the ground, good forage. Light is semi-shade or open. The foreground tree is a type of cyprus or cedar, behind me is a gnarly old yellow pine. Both sides of this saddle get regular burning. The southeast side is very arid, a solar furnace, so has few trees, mainly shrubs and grasses. | ![]()
